Mala means garland in Sanskrit ( an ancient language of India), it is a string of beads used for prayer when reciting mantras (sound, syllable, word or phrase that is considered capable of spiritual transformation), like a rosary. It has 108 beads, one for each of the earthly desires to be transcended. Nine is the sacred number and common denominator in Mala prayer beads. They can come with 54 beads and also 27 beads which are counted four times.
